The Big English Premier League Review 30/31 Jan

Sunday 31 January

Manchester United 3 - 1 Arsenal

Manchester United outplayed Arsenal at the Emirates in the big game of the weekend as they secured a convincing 3-1 win over the Gunners to move to within 1 point of league leaders Chelsea. Arsenal's title ambitions have been called into question after United tore them apart with some great attacking football. Nani created the opening goal with a sublime peace of skill when the Portuguese winger beat three Arsenal defenders before chipping in an inviting cross which Almunia could only parry into his own goal. Four minutes later United were two goals up after a great counter attacking move was rounded off by a first time finish from the in form Wayne Rooney which left Almunia helpless. 2-0 at the break. Park Ji Sung wrapped up the win for United in the 52nd minute when he ran unchallenged from his own half to beat Almunia. Arsenal did manage to grab a consolation goal when Thomas Vermaelen's shot was deflected past Van der Sar in the 80th minute but it was too little too late.

Manchester City 2 - 0 Portsmouth

Manchester City closed the gap on Tottenham and Liverpool with a comfortable 2-0 win over troubled Portsmouth on Sunday afternoon. Stephen Ireland's pass found Emmanuel Adebayor and the Togo striker blasted in an unstoppable shot to open the scoring for the hosts in the 40th minute. Vincent Kompany then added a second with a powerful header in first half stoppage time. The win sees City move level with 5th placed Liverpool on 41 points but with the advantage of having two games in hand.

Saturday 30 January

Liverpool 2 - 0 Bolton

Liverpool secured a much needed win against Bolton at Anfield on Saturday afternoon and in all honesty it could easily have been 4-0 at the final whistle. The Reds seem to have finally found some semblance of form as they are now on a 6 games unbeaten run(their best of the season!) and they opened the scoring though Dutch striker Dirk Kuyt after great work from young leftback Emiliano Insua set up Aquilani to nod the ball across the Bolton goal for Kuyt to stab home in the 37th minute. Liverpool should have doubled their lead before the break but had to wait until the 70th minute for their second goal and it was Insua again who obliged when his shot from distance took a wicked deflection off Davies to leave Juskelaainen stranded.
